UniWar for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia: Hex-based sci-fi strategy

2 years ago | POSTED IN Blackberry

Despite the name, UniWar is not a fight over who hasn’t paid their share of the gas bill. It's actually a sci-fi strategy game best thought of as a cross between Advance Wars, Starcraft and old TV quiz favourite Blockbusters. Like Advance Wars, the action in UniWar is turn-based and takes place on a geometric playing field, albeit one that’s hexagonal as opposed to a grid. Things like terrain effect your troops movement and potential cover against enemy attacks. And, like Starcraft...

Stieg Larsson Kindle eBook sales hit 1 million

2 years ago | POSTED IN Blackberry

Stieg Larsson, the author of the Millennium trilogy, has become the first author to sell over 1 million Kindle ebooks. His international best sellers The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest have earned him a place in the new ‘Kindle Million Club’ - a lonely place for now, since he’s the only member. Larsson, who passed away in 2004 before his novels hit the international charts, would no doubt be staggered...

Twitter for BlackBerry comes out of beta

2 years ago | POSTED IN Blackberry

RIM's official Twitter app for BlackBerry is now officially NOT a beta, having been updated to version 1.0.0.45 in the BlackBerry App World store. The app was criticised when it first emerged for not having as many features as rival apps like UberTwitter and Seesmic. However, during the course of the beta, the app was improved, with new features allowing people to do more. That includes seeing people's full profiles, and editing retweets before posting them. However, the big draw remains the way...

BlackBerry App World getting a v2.0 makeover

2 years ago | POSTED IN Blackberry

Having launched early last year, BlackBerry App World is due a revamp to help it match up to its app store rivals. Research In Motion is on the case, and has been showing off version 2.0 of its store app in the US. The biggest change - and a hugely welcome one to anyone who hasn't got a PayPal account - is the inclusion of carrier billing. If your operator supports it, you'll be able to buy apps on the BlackBerry App World and have the price charged to your phone bill. Another new feature is...

2 years ago | POSTED IN Blackberry

That person you met randomly on a night out and hoped you'd never see again. Those '20 minute meetings' that turn into 4 hour tests of patience. App Friday: The 10 best World Cup football apps

2 years ago | POSTED IN Blackberry

It's here! Buzzd sorts check-ins to find hot venues near you

2 years ago | POSTED IN Blackberry

There's been an explosion in social location apps for smartphones in the last year, most of which let you check-in to real-world venues and see where your friends are at. Foursquare, Gowalla, Rummble, Brightkite, Loopt... More are springing up every month too. Now another location-based service, Buzzd, has hit on the sensible idea of aggregating data from as many social location apps as possible, and using it to work out what places are hot in a given city in real-time. Whenever you fire up the...

BlackBerry gets Tawkon radiation prediction app

2 years ago | POSTED IN Blackberry

The latest research into whether mobile phones fry our brains was frustratingly inconclusive: in short, we probably won’t know for sure until we all start keeling over in 20 years time. Or not. One startup, Tawkon, is hoping to capitalise on people’s awareness of mobile phone radiation though. It’s launched an app for BlackBerry handsets that monitors and analyses your phone’s radiation, so you can – ahem – ‘talk on’ with less risk to your...
