Hands-on with the Shelby Mustang GT350 R

2015 Detroit motor show: We pointed our camera at the meanest, baddest Mustang on the block, the GT350 R, which has just been unveiled at the 2015 Detroit motor show.

The Shelby GT350 R is a downright scarier version of the V8-flavoured GT350 – that ‘R’ indicating race credentials. Anything unnecessary has been removed, from the rear seats and air-con to the stereo and soundproofing, to save weight.

All that effort means the 5.2-litre flat-plane crank V8 500bhp and 400lb/ft output has 59kg less to lug around compared with the GT350, so although performance figures are unknown, it can only be fast. But not as fast as this.

Ford has also added in an aerodynamics package, Torsen differential, MagneRide adjustable dampers responsible for a lower ride height, carbon fibre wheels and, if you ask nicely, the return of a few interior luxuries such as an 8-inch touchscreen and sound system.

In short, the GT350R cares little about how comfortable you feel. Nor does it care about fuel economy or going to the shops. It is designed as a track day monster. Our video awaits.
