Sony has announced that the BBC Sport app will be served up on the Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) alongside BBC iPlayer and BBC News in time for Wimbledon. The app will be accessible on Sony PlayStation 3 consoles and Sony’s BRAVIA range of Smart TVs before the balls start flying this summer.
That’s Tuesday the 26th of June for non-tennis fans who might otherwise be pretty chuffed to learn that their PS3 or Sony Smart TV will be able to get live sport from the Beeb this summer.
As with the BBC Sport service that’s hit Virgin Media’s TiVo box, the app for Sony machines gives you multiple camera angle coverage of live sporting events like Formula One races and the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games.
As well as live coverage of events the app will give you access to a wealth of on-demand footage.
Edd Uzzell, Sony category development manager for BRAVIA said; “Televised sport is one of the biggest rating wins for broadcasters. This truly is a killer app and will provide a substantial amount of additional sporting content that you can’t get through the current broadcasting model.”
“We strongly believe this will kick-start more widespread usage of the connected television offering, providing sport fans using the app with in-depth big-screen coverage of their favourite events,” he added.
“Launching this app to millions of PS3 owners in the UK will be a very welcome addition to PlayStation’s universal entertainment credentials” added Alan Duncan, UK Marketing Director for Sony Computer Entertainment UK.
The app’s user interface on either device is very similar to the layout of the current BBC Sport website.
If you click on the image above, we've uploaded the screengrab at the highest res available (1280x720) so if your monitor can handle it, you can get an idea of how the app will look on a 720p TV set. The app's menus will be easy to navigate with either a TV remote or a PS3 controller.
No launch dates have been given for either app. All iterations of PS3 will be able to use the app and BRAVIA tellies from the 2011 and 2012 range. Sony mentions that there’s “more devices to follow,” so perhaps we’ll to get BBC Sport Android app for Xperia phones and Sony tablets down the line. So far we’ve seen BBC News and BBC iPlayer apps for Android but no BBC Sport equivalent thus far.
