BT adds nearly 200,000 fibre customers, retains crown: UK Broadband Customer League Table

BT has announced its latest quarterly results which show that the UK’s leading ISP has signed up almost 200,000 fibre broadband subscribers.

In the last quarter 197,000 customers signed up for BT Infinity products representing a 30 per cent leap from last year’s figures. This takes BT Retail’s total number of fibre subscribers up to 1.5 million.

Just 95,000 new customers signed up for the traditional copper-based BT Broadband services, showing a real appetite for BT’s FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) and FTTP (Fibre to the Premises)-based products.

The Fibre Provider: BT’s fibre-based broadband services are proving popular

“Fibre remains at the heart of our plans and take-up is strong. Our fibre network now passes more than 16 million premises with more than 1.7 million connected.

“I am immensely proud to have led BT over the last five years. The foundations are in place for an exciting future and I’m confident that BT will make even more progress under [future CEO] Gavin [Patterson]’s leadership and our talented team.”

In the broadband game of thrones, BT’s broadband subscriber base now stands at 6.8 million placing head and shoulders above the other five kingdoms. Openreach, the network arm of BT Group, is on target to connect 19 million UK homes to its fibre-based broadband network by Spring 2014.

The total number of customers able to get superfast broadband on the Openreach network will swell thanks to BT being the only remaining bidder for contracts in the Broadband Delivery for the UK (BDUK) process.

Despite healthy competition from the likes of TalkTalk and EE, BT has experienced its strongest quarter to date. Livingston added that customer loss was as its lowest for five years and BT took a 50 per cent share of net additions for the whole UK market.
