BT Sport app kicks off on Chromecast

The BT Sport App will be able to throw video to your TV using Google’s Chromecast smart TV dongle from April 7.

Despite BT effectively saying ‘nothing to see here’ only yesterday, the company has admitted that it will appear in the Chromecast line-up alongside BBC iPlayer and Netflix.

BT Sport subscribers with a £30 Chromecast will be able to hit the ‘cast’ button to send video from the app to their TV screen.

Pete Oliver, BT’s managing director for consumer commercial and marketing, said: “Chromecast has been a tremendous success in the US and we feel it could take off in the UK as well.

“Customers with Chromecast will be able to enjoy the BT Sport App, which is free with broadband from BT, on a large screen, allowing customers to cast a Barclays Premier League match to their TV, rather than watching on a smaller screen.”

The announcement comes just a day after BT told Recombu they had no information on rumours that the app would be launched on Google’s TV dongle.

The BT Sport App allows subscribers to watch the BT Sport channels and ESPN UK live, as well as highlights, interviews, and catch-up on shows like Clare Balding’s sports chat show.

BT Sport is free with BT Broadband on the web, using the BT Vision+ box or via satellite with a Sky Digital box, and free with BT Infinity for YouView box owners.

It’s also available via subscription at £3/month to Sky Digital customers with another broadband provider, and is included in Virgin Media’s XL TV pack (or £3/month on other tiers).

Google launched Chromecast in 11 countries on March 19. The Cast Store app now lists 124 apps and 20 games for Chromecast, and BT’s quick arrival suggests Chromecast is an easy slice of extra functionality for developers to add.
