Data-only virtual network MobiData has launched a range of cheap mobile broadband plans that let you connect to the ultrafast Three network for less.
MobiData sells monthly rolling contracts that start at £4.94/month for 1GB. You can get 5GB for £14.94/month or a roomier 10GB for £19.79/month.
Currently there’s a three month contract which will give you double the amount of data for the same money. This is due to expire at the end of the month, so if you’re sold on the idea and want to save some money sign up now.
Read Recombu Digital’s guides to 4G and the UK 4G Spectrum AuctionYou’ll be able to put a MobiData SIM into a devices like the Huawei E5776 dongle, which will let you access DC-HSDPA speeds (up to 42Mbps). Real world trials have shown that on average you can expect speeds of around 21Mbps where DC-HSDPA is available with MobiData, so not too far away from current average 4G speeds.
Additionally, when Three rolls out 4G, all MobiData users will benefit from the same free upgrade, meaning you’ll be able to get turbocharged 4G speeds for less than a fiver a month.
Interestingly, MobiData says that its customers will benefit from this automatic upgrade in early 2014. Whether or not this sheds any light on Three’s launch plans – it’s supposed to be launching this month – remains to be seen.

As well as letting UK customers enjoy cheap data, MobiData also lets you get online for less in Europe, Turkey, the US and Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong as well.
Data in these locations are charged at 15p per MB on either of MobiData’s roaming plans. The full list of European countries is:

There currently aren’t any bundled plans for overseas destinations, but for business travellers and holidaymakers, a MobiData SIM in a MiFi device for your data needs could work out a lot cheaper for anyone wanting to check emails or upload pictures to Facebook from their laptops or phones.
