What is Acetrax?

Acetrax is a streaming service that lets you either rent movies on demand or buy to download and keep. There’s no monthly subscription or obligation to use Acetrax. It’s there to use as and when you want it with rental prices starting at £1.49. Available for PC and Mac, there’s also Acetrax apps for a growing army of smart TVs and Blu-ray players.

How much does Acetrax cost?

Prices for films vary, from £1.49 to £4.49 to rent and £6.99 to £9.99 to buy. Note that not all films that are available to rent are available to download to buy, and vice versa. This is due to the individual ownership and digital distribution rights for each film.

The sign up process for Acetrax is simple. You’ll need credit card details to hand and you’ll need to create a 6-digit PIN along with your username and password. The PIN, as well as providing security, is used to restrict access to any 18-rated films.

When renting films, you’ve got a 24 hour window in which to watch the film as soon as you start watching. When downloading to buy, the movie is yours to watch as many times as you like.

Whether you rent or buy, you’re able to watch films on up to three registered devices with access to Acetrax.

What’s on Acetrax?

With over 1,000 movie titles to choose from including The Woman in Black, 21 Jump Street, J. Edgar and The Dark Knight, Acetrax has a nice selection of current blockbuster hits. There’s also kids titles like Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rango plus cult classics like Pulp Fiction and District 9.

Films are broken down into genres like Kidzone, Documentary, Family, Horror, Romance and so on and the New to Rent and New to Buy sections regularly update with new titles.

There’s currently no TV episodes available on Acetrax. So while you can enjoy films like Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, you won’t be able to call up episodes of the BBC’s Sherlock or the Jeremy Brett classics.

Quality-wise, most films are presented in the 16:9 aspect ratio with ‘exceptions’ shown in 4:3 depending on the source material.

Can I watch Acetrax in high definition (HD)?

There’s also a small (but growing) selection of titles available to rent and buy from Acetrax in HD (720p). At the last count there was 120 HD movies available from Acetrax. HD movies are generally more expensive to rent and buy than the standard definition (SD) titles which Acetrax streams at DVD-quality 576p.

How fast does my broadband connection need to be for Acetrax?

Acetrax recommends that for HD movies you’ll need a download speed of 5Mbps or higher. For standard definition movies you’ll need a download speed of at least 3Mbps.

Can I watch Acetrax on my PC or Mac?

Yes. For Acetrax to work on PC and Mac however, you’ll need to have a Microsoft Silverlight plug-in installed in your browser. All of the popular browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari) are supported.

Can I watch Acetrax on my iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch?

No. There are currently no plans to bring Acetrax movies to either the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Can I watch Acetrax on my Android tablet or phone?

Despite its website claiming just one Android tablet is officially supported – the Toshiba A100 tablet – it’s also pre-installed on the Acer Iconia A700, and the Acetrax app in Google Play works with Samsung’s Galaxy S2 and S3.

Can I watch Acetrax on my Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii?

Not yet – there are no plans to move Acetrax’s movies on demand library to any of the current generation of home consoles.

Can I watch Acetrax on my smart TV or set-top box?

Yes. Acetrax is available on a wide variety of smart TVs and internet connected Blu-ray players.

Acetrax is available on LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung and Toshiba smart TVs and a number of Panasonic smart Blu-ray players. 

Until the end of October this year, you’ll also be able to snap up £50 worth of Acetrax credit with selected Samsung Blu-ray players, a special offer which may swing a purchase.
