Ofcom has announced a new consultation that aims to crack down on ISPs adding unexpected prices rises in the middle of broadband, landline and mobile contracts.
Currently, regulation states that an ISP can make price changes to contracts at any time, provided that their customers are given a month’s notice. Customers will also be given the option to leave their contract early without having to pay a termination charge.
Recently, Sky announced that upcoming Sky Talk prices changes were not due to take effect until December – customers have been given the heads up and the option to take their line rental business elsewhere.
Ofcom’s analysis of 1,644 complaints revealed that consumers don’t feel they’re getting enough of a warning of the impending doom changes to their services.
To whit, the regulator is now looking at ways in which price changes are communicated to subscribers. Ofcom expects to publish its results by the end of the year.
