Sky Go Android tablet app planned for December launch

Sky is planning to launch a dedicated Sky Go app specifically for Android tablets in December.

It’s expected that the app will be launched on December 3, though as the app is still being tested with a select group of trialists, things could change between now and then.

Virtually all 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich slates will be able to download the app from Google Play with the exception of the Asus Transformer TF101.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is very fangful that Sky Go for Android tablets is coming soon

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to Sky GoAccording to a post on Sky’s forum, this is due to unresolvable issues with streaming that are apparently specific to this device.

Amazon Kindle Fire owners won’t be able to download the app, though it’s not currently clear whether there’s a technical reason for this or it’s due to the app having to be submitted to the Amazon Appstore, which is separate to Google Play.

Further comments from a Sky spokesperson on the thread reveal that the Android tablet app should have all of the same functions and features of the iOS app. Back in July, Sky launched a refreshed version of its iOS Sky Go app, which should give us some idea of what Android tablet owners can expect.

Sky has been pulling out all the stops to improve support for Android devices. In July, the company apologised to TV customers who wanted to watch shows on their phones and tablets, but had been left out in the cold thanks to prolonged development issues.

Since then, support has increased to cover 45 Android phones, including the LG G2, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Sony Xperia Z1. Developing for tablets has proven trickier, something which the BBC has also experienced when it’s come to updating iPlayer for larger-screened Android devices

Sky Go lets you access up to 48 live channels (depending on your Sky TV subscription) including Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts 1, all 11 Sky Movies channels, all Sky Sports channels including Sky Sports F1 and British Eurosport. E4 and Film 4 were added recently and more channels are to be added to the line up before next summer
