All new Sky customers will now get an HD digital TV recorder with built-in WiFi for easy connection to Sky’s internet-delivered on demand TV and film library.

The standard Sky+HD is free to all new customers and has 250GB of user space, while the Sky+HD 2TB costs £249 without discounts and has 1.5TB of user space.

Sky claims it takes just ‘a couple of buttons’ to connect the new boxes to your WiFi, allowing access to catch-up TV, series box sets and movies via your broadband.

Sky+HD relaunched with built-in WiFi for On Demand

Read Recombu Digital's guides to Sky+HD and Sky On DemandLuke Bradley-Jones, Sky’s brand director of TV products, said: "Record levels of On Demand viewing show that Sky customers love the flexibility the service offers.

“When people connect their Sky+HD box to broadband they get instant access to the UK’s biggest catch-up TV service and an extensive on-demand library of TV box sets and exclusive movies – and we’re seeing a growing demand.

“We want even more people to enjoy these benefits, so we’re making it easier to get connected by launching our best ever Sky+HD box with built-in Wi-Fi and offering existing customers a free On Demand connector.”

The relaunch of Sky+HD follows the giveaway of free Wireless Connectors for Sky+HD owners who have not connected their boxes to On Demand, and free replacement for first-generation Sky+HD boxes which didn’t support the broadband connection.

The new boxes feature an instant-connection button on the front for connecting to a broadband router equipped for WPS security, which will prompt you to enter a PIN with your remote.

Most standard routers from Sky, BT, TalkTalk, Virgin and other ISPs come pre-configured with WPS, although some users turn it off to boost their network’s security.

Sky’s on-demand catch-up roster is being expanded by up to 20 channels over the next year, starting with Discovery, Dave, Gold and Cartoon Network before the end of 2013.

The standard Sky+HD features a 500GB hard disc, with 250GB available for users to record up to 60 hours of HD. The remaining 250GB is set aside to be pre-loaded via satellite with on-demand films and TV for the Showcase section of Sky On Demand.

Sky+HD 2TB has a 2TB hard disc, with 1.5TB of user space allowing 350 hours of HD recordings, and 500GB of reserved for instant-access in the Sky On Demand Showcase.

New Sky customers who don’t order HD channels (the Sky Entertainment Extra+ package) are told they get a standard Sky+ - it’s actually a standard Sky+HD and can be used to watch seven free HD channels from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and others.
