Ofcom is planning to make calls to 0800 numbers free from mobile phones, but the consultation it announced this week won’t deliver those for some time. Until then there’s the 0800 Wizard app from Skycom.
How can it offer free calls to 0800 numbers so you don’t fear those warnings telling you “calls from mobile phones may be charged”? By rerouting the freephone number you dialled to an 01 or 02 number.
That way the call is covered by the monthly bundled minutes that come with your mobile phone plan. And if you don't have any minutes left or you’re on a pay-as-you-go contract, calls are only charged at the same rate as a standard geographic number.
The app works for freephone 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers and is available for Android, Blackberry, iPhone and Windows Phone 7.
It could save you 41 pence per minute, whether you’re calling an emergency breakdown service, paying a bill or reporting your credit card lost.
