Although it feels far longer than a year since Android users said farewell to the Android Market and hello to Google Play, Google’s mobile content store turns one today and in light of this, they’re celebrating with a bunch of deals, discounts and exclusives for Android users the world over.

When the original Android Market launched some four years ago, it’d amassed around 2300 apps by March 2009; jump to February this year and Google Play has now hit the 800,000 app mark just one month after their leading rival; Apple’s App store achieved the same milestone. In markets like the US and UK, the Play store now offers up even more than simply apps.

Google Play first birthday

As part of the consolidation of the Android Market and Google Music into Google Play, the company have continued to add content beyond apps such as music, movies, magazines and books to supplement the experience and create a content hub which can keep users coming back for more than just apps.

In light of their first birthday, Google are placing select Play store content on discount as well as offering exclusive in app items thanks to partnerships with select Android developers. The deals on offer are country dependant but in the UK, games such as Yumby Smash and Gnome Village are receiving new characters and locations respectively whilst a number of popular games including Contre Jour and Dead Space are half price for a limited time.
