Best budget tablets for Christmas 2015

We round up the best-value tablets you can buy yourself or as a present for Christmas 2015, including family-friendly tablets, Amazon’s super-cheap £50 slate and the surprisingly affordable iPad Mini.

Asus ZenPad 8.0

The Asus ZenPad 8.0 is a sleek little Android tablet that’s roughly the same shape and weight as the iPad Mini, packing a nippy Intel processor that makes it a solid choice for a spot of Christmas gaming. The 8-inch screen is crisp and colourful and the square aspect ratio makes it well suited to web browsing, apps and games.

Apple iPad Mini 2 (with Retina Display)

Apple has just launched its latest dinky tablet, the iPad Mini 4, which now boasts the same power as the original iPad Air. To be honest, however, we still love the iPad Mini 2, which has now dropped in price to just £219.

That makes it one of the pricier tablets here, but it really is a bargain considering how awesome the iPad Mini 2 is. After all, you get a fantastically slim and light device rocking a gorgeous Retina display and enough power to handle the extensive range of apps on Apple’s App Store.

Amazon Fire HD 6

The Amazon Fire HD 6 is an admittedly niche tablet, with a seriously compact screen that makes it almost as small as some smartphones (along it’s admittedly a bit of a chunky beast). However, if your priority is affordable portability or you’re just after something your kids can mess around on, there’s plenty of value packed in here thanks to its solid features and excellent family controls.

It really helps if you’re an Amazon advocate, of course. You get direct access to the Amazon store for Kindle books, movies, music and more, and if you’re a Prime member you can stream movies and TV shows for free. Meanwhile, parents can limit how much their kids can spend with the Fire HD, even setting time limits and restricting web use.

And, if you’re mega skint or just a bit stingy, Amazon is also offering a basic Fire tablet for just £50. Bargain.
