Huawei Ascend G7 offers great value 4G to take on the Moto G

Huawei has jumped the gun on MWC 2015 to launch its new great-value 4G phone, the Huawei Ascend G7 – a feature-packed rival to the Motorola Moto G, boasting a slender all-metal body, 5.5-inch screen and 13-megapixel camera.

We’re still huge fans of the Huawei Ascend G6 4G, which launched a year ago and offered 4G browsing on top of some seriously good specs for just £99. That’s why we’re excited to hear that Huawei has pulled back the curtain on the Ascend G7, which promises an improved camera experience and sexier design, plus even more awesome features – although the cost has scaled up as a result.

From the press photos, the Ascend G7 looks to be even slimmer than the Ascend G6 at just 7.6mm – not quite as slender as the new Samsung Galaxy A-range, but still pleasingly thin. It’s an all-metal frame too, just like Samsung’s babies, so hopefully should be solid enough to withstand a tumble or two.

Media fans will hopefully be well serviced by the spacious 5.5-inch IPS screen, which packs a 720p resolution just like similarly-priced rivals. As for the optics, there’s a 13-megapixel rear camera with built-in flash and a 5-megapixel selfie cam, and you can upload those sexy selfies to Facebook in no time at all thanks to the 4G support.

The Ascend G7 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core ARM Cortex A53 and there’s 2GB of RAM to keep things ticking over smoothly. A 3,000mAh battery has also been crammed into the metal body, so we’re hoping for battery life that lasts well into a second day.

Android 4.4 KitKat will be covered with Huawei’s Emotion UI, so expect the apps tray to once again be mysteriously missing.

The Huawei Ascend G7 will hit the UK in March and will be available from Carphone Warehouse in pointlessly-adjectified colours including Horizon Gold, Moonlight Silver and Space Grey (hmm, copying from Apple on that one, Huawei?).

As for the UK price, nothing has been finalised but Huawei says to expect a price tag of around £149. That’s a serious step up from the Ascend G6 4G, but still competitive compared to the Motorola Moto G, making these phones direct rivals. The difference is, Huawei’s mobile comes with 4G, unlike the Moto G.
