The i8510 is Samsung’s answer to the Nokia N95 — a do-it-all phone that’s as mean as it looks. There’s an 8-megapixel camera, 8GB of on-board memory, HSDPA and Wi-Fi.
What we like
Unlike most Samsung phones the i8510 runs on Symbian, so if you’re used to using high-end Nokia phones then it’s an easy switch. There’s no touchscreen but the keypad is easy great for texting and the screen is relatively large.
Everything has been crammed into the i8510 from HSDPA (3.5G) to Wi-Fi, not forgetting GPS and an 8-megapixel camera. Pictures taken in daylight looked great and there’s a very cool automatic panorama mode that stitches pictures together creating a panoramic photo. You can also shoot video with the camera and there’s a slow-motion mode for shooting fast-paced action.
It’s worth noting that the video player supports DivX, which is great of you want to store large clips or films on the i8510.
As if all of the above wasn’t enough to get us interested, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack so you can plug your cans straight in, and 16GB of on-board memory. There’s even a microSD slot to expand the memory even further.
What we don’t like
Sometimes less is more and the addition of a fiddly touch-sensitive navigation key, that acts like a mini trackpad, is something the i8510 could have done without. The i8510’s dual LED photo light isn’t as good as a xenon flash which means shots in low light don’t come out very well. We were also disappointed by the i8510’s screen that isn’t as sharp as we expected. Finally, certain Nokia apps and DivX files aren’t supported, which is a shame.
Conclusion
This is one of Samsung’s best slider phones and while it does have a few issues, we think it’s fantastic. Everything from its design to its features made us happy and if you’re looking for an all-in-one phone it’s definitely worth checking out.
