Sony Xperia Z4 Ultra phablet to launch alongside Xperia Z4

Specs for the as-yet-unannounced Sony Xperia Z4 Ultra, Sony’s latest big-screen device, have been leaked online. But how will it sit alongside the upcoming Xperia Z4 and is it an Apple 6 Plus challenger?

The Sony Xperia Z3 is only a few months old but we’ve already been treated to a glimpse of what the device’s successor, the Xperia Z4, will have to offer. Intriguingly it appears that Sony will also be launching a phablet-sized Xperia phone alongside the Z4, called the Xperia Z4 Ultra.

While the standard Xperia Z4 will reportedly feature an already-substantial 5.4-inch qHD Triluminos display, the Xperia Z4 Ultra will be an absolute beast comparable to the Galaxy Note 4, with a 5.9-inch Triluminos panel. It’ll also pack the same Snapdragon 805 processor which Sony has reportedly fitted into the Xperia Z4.

The Sony Xperia Z4 Ultra will also offer a mammoth 4GB RAM, making it one of the most powerful phablets on the market.

However, the leak also suggests that the Xperia Z4 Ultra will actually take a cut in camera size, with a 16-megapixel primary snapper with dual LED flash planned (compared with the Xperia Z4’s 20.7-megapixel effort). There’s talk that the sensor might be one of Sony’s new, all-singing, all-dancing IMX230’s though, so quality shouldn’t be an issue for the device.

Sony is keen to maintain its reputation for delivering the thinnest devices on the market, so although the Z4 Ultra sports a massive screen, it’s reportedly just 5.4mm thick. That should hopefully help to keep the phablet pocket-sized and not too uncomfortable to wield.

The Xperia Z4 Ultra appears to be a direct answer to the likes of Samsung and Apple, who have launched their own phablets in recent months. It’s likely to be well received in Asia, where phablets seem to have an uncanny popularity, but how well it’ll fare in Western shores is yet to be seen.

Personally, we’d rather see a compact version rather than a massive phablet model. The Xperia Z3 Compact is one of our favourite phones of 2014, with all of the Xperia Z3’s performance and top features bundled into a mini body that’s a genuine pleasure to use. We like Sony’s last major phablet, the Xperia Z Ultra, which packed a ridiculously gorgeous Full HD screen, but it’s a niche product much like Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus, which has generally struggled to sell alongside the iPhone 6.

We shouldn’t have long to wait until we hear from the horse’s mouth, as both the Xperia Z4 and Xperia Z4 Ultra are due to be revealed at Sony’s CES launch in Las Vegas on January 5th.
