It was only a couple of weeks ago that we saw a French retailer listing the Acer Iconia W3, an unannounced 8-inch Windows 8 tablet. The device leaked onto the internet yet again over the weekend, with Amazon this time serving up images, specs, and the all important price before quickly pulling its listing.
According to the pulled listing, the Iconia W3 will feature an 8-inch screen with a 1280×800 resolution. The tablet will be powered by a dual-core Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.8Ghz, along with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The device will also include a 2-megapixel camera on the front and back, as well as Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n support. Everything will apparently be powered by a 3,500mAh battery, with the spec sheet suggesting around 8 hours of battery life.
Amazon didn’t display a shipping date for the tablet, but it did reveal the price: $380 (around £244). That would put it in the same price bracket as the iPad mini, a surprise given that we’ve only seen Windows RT tablets hitting that price point so far. Then again, the use of an Atom processor and smaller screen most likely helps to keep the price down.
Microsoft is aware of the demand for smaller tablets, with reports suggesting that the company is working on smaller versions of its own Surface tablets. Recent information indicates that the company could unveil 7- to 8-inch second-generation versions of the Surface at Build, a developer event due to begin at the end of June.
