New aluminium-bodied Nokias to appear in 2013

2013 looks to be the year of the aluminium-clad Lumias if sources tied to Nokia are to be believed. The Finnish company have been able to establish a distinct brand image since they adopted Windows Phone as their primary mobile operating system and started to take cues from its vibrant, block colour UI.

Using the MeeGo-based Nokia N9 as a stepping stone, they’ve gone on to produce a myriad of beautiful, colourful polycarbonate handsets, some staying true to Nokia’s heritage with snap-on exchangeable covers and some adopting a new level of sophistication by utilising unibody construction methods. The last Nokia made predominantly out of aluminium was the Nokia N8; the Symbian 3-based handset famed for its impressive 12-megapixel camera.

Nokia Lumia 920

According to The Verge, the next range of Lumias will be headed up by a replacement to the current flagship; the Nokia Lumia 920 which debuted in New York, just last September. Aluminium construction and design of the handset, codenamed Catwalk, will allow the company to reduce bulk and weight, something rather apparent with the feature-laden Lumia 920. Despite the switch to a metal body however, Nokia are still planning on producing handsets in striking colours and there are said to be at least two other Lumia devices launching alongside Catwalk in 2013.

With regards to availability, we don’t yet know when any of these devices are set to break cover, but typically Nokia hold their big announcements at Mobile World Congress (which saw the arrival of the Nokia 808 PureView last year) or Nokia World which is usually held in the latter portion of the year.
