Apple iPad 3 to have retina display?

Could the next generation of the iPad be getting an upgraded screen? According to comments from technology blogger John Gruber the iPad 3 could have a twice the resolution of Apple’s current tablet.

In a piece on his website Daringfireball about reading magazines on the iPad, Gruber states: These magazines and newspapers that render each “page” as a static 1024 × 768 image are going to look like utter ass on the iPad 3’s 2048 × 1536 retina display.’

Whether this is an accidental slip or red herring remains to be see, but Gruber is know throughout the industry for having insider knowledge of Apple and its workings.

Currently found on the Apple iPhone 4, the 960×640 Retina display has 326 pixels per inch and 800:1 contrast ratio offering four times the contrast of conventional phones. This LED backlit screen uses an ambient light sensor that adjusts the screen automatically. In our tests the only phone to come close to offering the depth of black and purity of white is the Samsung Galaxy S2.

A Retina display on the new iPad would be an exciting prospect, imagine how stunning HD movies and photos will look? If this is true maybe we’ll see a Galaxy Tab with a Super AMOLED screen?
