Yes, really. Due to the meteoric rise of their iPad tablet, technically a PC, Apple held 17.2% of all PCs shipped in the 4th quarter of 2010.

Their leap to to the top sees HP, Acer and Dell all trailing behind, with 15.6%, 14% and 9.9% respectively.

Combined MacBooks and iPads sales totalled 10.2 million world-wide; just under 1 million more than nearest rival HP.

Given that Apple's iPad has inspired a wave of high-end tablets coming on rival platform, Android, it's almost expected that their share could tail-off this year. By the end of this year, tablet rivals will include Motorola's Xoom, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, the HP TouchPad, HTC's Flyer and LG's Optimus Pad.

Rumours suggest there could even be an iPad successor by this time next year.
