HTC’s One M8 with Windows Phone officially revealed

HTC’s first Windows Phone handset in two years, the HTC One M8 for Windows, is a half-price version of the Android original. But whether it will hit the UK is still a mystery…

There were sadly few surprises at HTC’s big New York launch yesterday evening, as its new Windows Phone handset, dubbed the HTC One M8 for Windows, was finally officially launched. The new Windows Phone One M8 boasts a much cheaper price tag than the original Androidy One M8, yet sports many of the same features. But so far there’s no word on a UK launch, as the phone rolls out in the States.

HTC One M8 for Windows is a Windows Phone version of the original smartphone

Hardware-wise, this new model is identical to its older Android sibling, something we already knew thanks to the copious leaks. What’s changed is the software side, with live tiles replacing the nifty Blinkfeed on the home screen.

You get full Windows Phone 8.1, so the trouser-stirring Cortana voice assistant will be on hand to help you through your day. However, HTC has still packed in its BlinkFeed streaming service, this time in the guise of an app.

Apparently the HTC One M8 for Windows will cost a significant chunk less than the original One M8, priced at just $99 US with a 24-month contract. That’s roughly half-price compared with the Android version. But as of now, the seems to be no plans to bring the phone to the UK.

HTC is collaborating closely with Microsoft, who already owns prolific Windows Phone mobile manufacturer Nokia, to market the new Windows version of the One M8. Personally we’re excited to see some competition for the Lumia range, something that hasn’t happened since HTC’s last stab at a Windows Phone handset, almost two years ago.

Do you think the Windows Phone version of the One M8 is a tempting prospect? Better than the Lumia 930? Let us know in the comments below.
