iPad 3 delayed due to Retina Display issues

Hot from the rumour mill this morning: Apple’s third iteration of the iPad will not be launching later this year, due to supply shortages of iPad-sized Retina Displays.

Granted, that’s an awful lot of rumour crammed into one statement: first, that the iPad 3 was ever going to launch in the same year as the iPad 2, breaking Apple’s yearly launch cycle; second, that the iPad 3 was going to have the iPhone 4’s Retina Display technology in the first place; and third, that shortages thereof are now delaying the iPad 3’s launch. So have your salt cellar to hand and pinch liberally.

According to Taiwanese tech reporters Digitimes, the story goes that Apple “was originally set to launch its iPad 3 in the second half of 2011 with a supply volume of 1.5-2 million units in the third quarter and 5-6 million in the fourth quarter.” However, this plan has now been scrapped, as the companies that can supply Apple with its Retina Displays either can’t make them quickly enough or cheaply enough to get the tablet out the door in time.

Rumours of a third iPad generation being released in the same year that launched the iPad 2 were springing up around June, when references to an ‘iPad 3.1’ and ‘iPad 3.2’ were found hiding in the code of a beta version of iOS 5. As for the Retina Display, that was a big expectation of the iPad 2 which failed to materialise, although several reliable sources have hinted that its inclusion in the next iPad is a near-cert.

Apple’s next big product launch is usually the new iPod line in September, although this year we’re also expecting to see the iPhone 5 that was so pointedly absent at this year’s WWDC back in June. Reckon we’ll see a third iPad moseying down the red carpet as well? Let us know on our Facebook page or on the Recombu Twitter feed.
