Jolla announces first Sailfish OS phone, available before the end of 2013 for €399

Remember Jolla? The MeeGo team that spun off from Nokia after the adoption of Windows Phone has finally announced a physical smartphone running Sailfish OS. The Next Web reports that the handset will feature a 4.5-inch “Estrade” display of unknown resolution, along with a dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera.

The device will also include 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. LTE connectivity is onboard, as is a removable battery, hidden behind colourful back plates that easily snap into place. Jolla has dubbed those exchangeable covers “The Other Half”, as the company is hoping that people will buy different colour cases in order to customize the phone.

The more significant news, however, is that Sailfish OS will be “compliant” with Android apps. There aren’t any details so far as to exactly how many Android apps will be supported, however, nor how developers or end users will be able to use the functionality. Availability of the phone also seems to be dependent on how successful pre-orders are, with Jolla saying that it will be “subject to demand in your local market.”

Jolla is planning a European launch for now, with more countries to come later down the line. The company says that the phone will be made available before the end of 2013, and cost €399 (around £337). That price will drop to €299, however, for anyone who opts to pay €100 for their pre-order today, with additional extras including a limited edition back cover for the phone, a t-shirt, and priority order status.
