The Moto X will always be listening with its Open Mic feature

We’ve heard a lot about the specs of the Moto X up until this point, but not much in the way of software features or specific customisations. Leaked videos have now given us a clearer picture of what Motorola has been working on, with the company seemingly delivering on its promise to create a handset that’s aware of the surrounding environment.

The first video comes from Reddit user KronikBudz, who had some hands on time with the phone. Budz managed to confirm some of the specs for the phone too, with CPU-Z identifying the Moto X as featuring a Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, a 720p display, and 16GB of internal storage. The Reddit user also described one of the features of the Moto X, dubbed Open Mic. The phone apparently listens out for voice commands even when in standby mode, triggering the appropriate action when a certain phrase or keyword is uttered by the device’s owner.

Another video was inadvertently leaked over the weekend too by Canadian carrier Rogers. In addition to the Open Mic feature, the Moto X will also include “Active Updates”. That seems to provide glanceable information, with the screen actively displaying the time as well as any pending notifications. The camera can also be activated by a simple twist of the wrist – a weird gesture, but one that could prove to be handy.

The video confirmed that the handset will be available in both black and white, with a release date pegged for August. That puts us only a few short weeks away from a possible Moto X launch, so an official announcement will no doubt come very soon.
