With news that Nokia’s Lumia 1020 is being discontinued in September 2014, could Nokia/Microsoft be planning a huge new camera phone to replace that 41-megapixel snapper?
Yesterday we heard that the Nokia Lumia 1020 will be discontinued from September 14th, one year after the 41-megapixel super-snapper was launched. It’ll still be available to buy for a short while afterwards, until current stocks are depleted, but no more Lumia 1020s will be produced. Which makes us wonder if Nokia, and its new owners Microsoft, are planning to launch a brand new camera phone at IFA 2014.
The timing is what makes us so suspicious. IFA 2014 kicks off in Berlin on September 3rd for media visitors, and phone manufacturers usually take the opportunity to show off their cutting-edge new handsets. Nokia has concentrated heavily on its camera tech in recent times, producing epic camera phones ever since the release of the 808 Pureview, so we fully expect to see a new hardcore snapper emerge at IFA if the mighty 1020 is being laid to rest just days after.
Of course, with Nokia only just releasing its beautiful new flagship phone, the Lumia 930, perhaps the 1020’s impending demise is just a case of streamlining the Lumia range. We’ll be haunting the halls of IFA 2014 regardless, to bring you the big Nokia news.
