Nvidia shows off slick new Tegra tablet with stylus and LTE

Nvidia gave us some hands-on time with its new Tegra Note 7 LTE tablet, which comes packing a stylus and 4G support for a lot less than the Samsung Galaxy Note tablets

Graphics whizzkid Nvidia is releasing its powerful Tegra Note 7 tablet in the UK later this year, and best of all, we’ll be getting the super-nippy LTE version. We had a chance to play with the Tegra Note 7 LTE at MWC 2014, and came away impressed considering the cool features and low cost.

From a design standpoint, the Nvidia Tegra Note 7 LTE is a good-looking little Android tablet. It’s a seven-incher, so comfortable to hold one-handed, with dual speakers pointing at your face to give you a powerful audio experience.

The 7-inch IPS LCD screen may not be Full HD, with a 1280×800 pixel resolution (giving 216ppi), but it’s powerfully bright and enjoys rich colours and wide viewing angles. Nvidia also gives you a passive stylus to scribble on the screen – it’s not as high-tech as Samsung’s S-Pen, with just a rubber tip, but we found it was accurate and the display was perfectly responsive to our swipes. The Tegra Note 7 LTE was even smart enough to work out when our palm intruded onto the screen, and ignored it.

Nvidia’s computational photography architecture (known by the much catchier name of Chimera), working in combo with the 72-core GeForce GPU, allows for some pretty nifty graphical wizardry. We saw some cool demos in action, including the little sliver of creepiness you see below – a human face rendered in stunning detail, showing a range of realistic emotions, almost all of them terrifying.

The 5-megapixel rear camer also takes advantage of the graphics chip to do some cool things. For instance, you get always-on HDR. Instead of taking three separate shots and combining them to optimise the lighting conditions, the Tegra takes just a single shot and uses the GPU to sort out any darker areas of contrast.

The camera can also track specific objects or people with just a single tap, keeping them sharply in focus. Even better, you can set different exposure and focal points, for even more control over your vids.

The Nvidia Tegra Note 7 LTE will hit UK Dixons stores pretty soon – Nvidia reckons in the next couple of months – and will cost under £300 (it’s currently $299 in the States).
