The all-metal Samsung Galaxy S5 Alpha might never hit the UK

The metal-cased Samsung Galaxy Alpha, a sexy redesign of the Galaxy S5 smartphone, may sadly never see the light of day in the UK…

We’ve heard rumblings of a special metal-clad version of the annoyingly plasticky Samsung Galaxy S5 emerging soon, but the latest rumours suggest the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is going to be a rare limited edition rather than a full-on phone release. That means it may never even come to the UK – so if you want the best Galaxy out there, you’ll have to make do with that soft touch.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Alpha will likely be a limited edition version of Samsung's flagship phone

According to Korean reports, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha’s metal chassis is being constructed in China, because all the Taiwanese metal casing specialists are busy churning out parts for the iPhone. Apparently, the Chinese manufacturers are a little slower at producing components in comparison to companies like Foxconn and Castek Holdings, and there aren’t any Korean manufacturers free to make the parts either.

The knock-on effect of this means that only a million cases can be produced each month and therefore a million devices – much lower than Samsung’s usual 10 million shipments for a flagship device like the Galaxy S5. So, if you want a metal Galaxy S5, be prepared to stump up some serious dough on eBay.

Also, rumours suggest the Galaxy Alpha will ship with an LTE-A chip for super-fast broadband. The only market that has an operation infrastructure for this is Korea itself.

Aside from its metal casing, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is also said to include an Exynos 5 Octa chipset or a quad core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 805 processor from Qualcomm (presumably depending on the market), and a more compact 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display. It may be thinner too at just 6mm – comparable to the super-slim Galaxy Tab S. It will also pack in 3GB of RAM, a front facing 2.1-megapixel camera and a rear-facing 16-megapixel camera.

Samsung is rumoured to announce the Galaxy Alpha at IFA in September alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, although other rumours suggest it could be released earlier – maybe even next month.
