Samsung Gear Live is the newest Android Wear device. Pre-orders from tomorrow

We’ve been aware of the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch for a while now, but today at Google I/O, we glimpsed Samsung’s first Android Wear device – the Gear Live.

When it comes to wearables, Samsung has easily become the most prolific creator of smartwatches over the past couple of years, in the form of its Gear line. The Samsung Galaxy Gear kicked things off, offering a stripped down Android experience designed to work in conjunction with Samsung’s latest smartphones at the time, such as the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S4.

At Mobile World Congress earlier this year, we met the second generation of the Gear family: The Samsung Gear Fit, Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, all of which launched alongside the Samsung Galaxy S5. These newer smartwatches did away with Android altogether; in the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo opting for Tizen instead, a platform Samsung has a big stake in.

With the arrival of Android Wear – a dedicted operating system for wearable technology that’s fully supported by Google, the smartwatch platform has the chance to become a lot more prevolent. Samsung’s one of the first players alongside LG and Motorola to have produced a device running Android Wear in the form of the Samsung Gear Live.

Whilst specs weren’t discussed during the Google I/O keynote, Samsung has just revelead that the Gear Live sports a 1.63-inch square 320×320 resolution display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM and comes with 4GB of internal storage. As with its current crop of smartwatches, the Gear Live is also IP67-certified water and dust resistant.

From a design perspective, Samsung are keeping the Gear Live in line with the Gear 2, by utilising a metal body with a polymer strap. Press images also reveal that like Sammy’s current smartwatches, the Gear Live also features a heart rate sensor.

Google promised that the Gear Live would be available for pre-order today (in the States) and will hit pre-order in the UK from tomorrow.
