Sony’s wireless lens cameras for Android and iOS leaked in official images

Smartphones are great for taking quick pictures in the heat of the moment, but the small sensors just can’t match up to what you’ll find on DSLRs or Micro Four Third cameras  Sony may be working on a somewhat awkward solution that would marry the best of both worlds, according to SonyAlphaRumors.

The site has leaked imagery of the DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 lenses, standalone cameras that are designed to be attached to your smartphone. The lenses reportedly feature Wi-Fi, NFC, and an SD card slot, automatically pairing to your device and wireless transferring pictures after they’re taken. Better yet, Sony will apparently use large, 1-inch sensors that should produce photos on par with currently available high-end compact cameras.

And one of the lenses will even include zoom capabilities. SAR says that the DSC-QX100 will feature a 10x optical zoom, as well as a 1/2,3 inch 18 megapixel sensor. Both lenses will work with Android and iOS, but pricing and availability details weren’t revealed.

If the lenses turn out to be real, then it’s a pretty bold move on Sony’s part. How many people will want to attach such a large accessory to their smartphone? We could see the camera working nicely with larger devices – such as the Xperia Z Ultra or Samsung Galaxy Note 2 – but we imagine that it would prove bulky and unwieldy on something like the iPhone 5. Having said that, a standalone lens will take better pictures than what a smartphone can offer while being more compact than a traditional DSLR.
