Sony Xperia ZR tipped for 4.6-inch 720p display, water resistance

Sony has already puts out its flagship handset for the year, the Xperia Z, and it also has a capable mid-range phone ready to go with the Xperia SP. Rumour has it that Sony is preparing another device in the Xperia Z line dubbed the Xperia ZR. Xperia Blog reports that the company will be launching the handset shortly with water and dust proof capabilities similar to the Xperia Z.

Specifications for the alleged phone include a 4.6-inch 720p display, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and a 13-megapixel Exmor RS camera. Just like the Xperia Z, there’s a microSD card for further expanded storage, and the whole shebang will apparently be powered by a 2,300mAh battery.

Xperia Blog says that the design of the handset will be closer to the Xperia ZL than the Z, so we could be seeing a phone that cuts down on bezel size. The water resistant rating will also reportedly be bhigher than the Xperia Z. Sony’s flagship is currently rated for IP55/IP57, whereas the ZR will be rated at IP55/IP58. That would let the handset be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes.

Don’t expect a super svelte package, though: the publication says the phone will be around 10mm in thickness (even thicker than the Xperia ZL) and weigh around 140g. There’s no details as to when Sony will announce the handset, but it isn’t too difficult to imagine it making an appearance in the coming months.
