LG to unveil 105-inch and 77-inch monsters 4K Ultra HD monsters at CES 2014

It’s Y4K for LG at this year’s CES; the Korean giant is set to unveil a massive 105-inch curved 4K Ultra HD OLED TV.

Intent on stealing the floor at next week’s international trade show, LG is claiming that its 105UB9 is the world’s largest curved OLED with a 4K resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) and a 21:9 cinematic aspect ratio.

Yong-kee Hwang, senior vice president and head of LG Display’s TV Business Unit said: “LG Display has kept its dominant position in the display market with innovative and differentiated technologies.

“With a resolution of 11 million pixels, the 105-inch curved LCD panel is proof of our continued leadership in the next generation display market, offering exceptional world-class value to our customers.”

LG announces huge 105-inch 4K TV and the only available press shot is 500 pixels wide

The 105-inch giant will be accompanied by three smaller 77, 65 and 55-inch versions from LG’s EC9800 range, aimed at those with more modest living room space (and budgets).

Though prices have yet to be announced we can expect them to be pretty steep; LG’s previous curved HD TV – the 55EA980W – was a lowly 55-inch Full HD 1080p panel and will set you back around £7,999. We can expect the new sets to be upwards of this.

As well as packing a higher pixel count, LG’s forthcoming curvy tellies will also feature WRGB technology, LG’s proprietary ‘four colour’ system. LG claims that the extra white sub pixels sitting alongside the red, green and blue colour filters can guarantee much more natural colours, deeper blacks and brilliant whites.

It’s not just the 4K Ultra HD OLEDs that benefit from this either. LG’s Full HD GALLERY designer TV (55EA8800) and the CURVED OLED TV (model 55EB9600), with its friendly environmental footprint, will also feature the same WRGB technology and colour control.

In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV Division at LG Electronics’ Home Entertainment Company said: “All of the exceptional OLED models we’re showcasing at CES 2014 offer the ultimate in picture quality and refined, modern aesthetics.

“Driving the evolution of television into the next generation, LG will continue to employ its technological and design expertise to bring impressive OLED TVs to market.”

The LG 77EC9800 is a 77-inch beast which promises excellent picture and colour fidelity – but how much will it cost?

The GALLERY range boasts a so-called ‘canvas speaker’, a built-in 2.2 channel 100W speaker system, LG says that this provides the best audio experience of any OLED and could be ideal for those after an all-in-one solution. The TV also features a unique ‘eGallery’ mode that will display famous works of art on your TV, screensaver style. Perhaps taking a leaf out of the S[edition] book, the LG GALLERY OLED also features a relaxation mode which pipes soothing music around the living room to accompany atmospheric landscapes.

The environmentally friendly credentials of the CURVED OLED model has seen LG scoop a CES 2014 Innovations Award for its commitment to reducing waste and using more recyclable materials in its design than previous models. Whether you value cutting down your personal carbon footprint more than making your living room look like a mini Saatchi gallery with a new TV, it looks like LG has you covered.

All of the LG 4K curved OLEDs on show at CES will be able to decode broadcast signals in H.264 and HEVC H.265 at 30fps or 60fps, future-proofing you to a degree. You’ll be able to stream 4K content from external devices connected via the HDMI, USB and LAN ports. Of course, if broadcasters decide that live 4K TV standards need to be higher, then this could be a moot point.

Detailed spec sheets for each of the models have not yet been revealed by LG. More information should become available once CES kicks off on January 7.
