Motorola Mobile Phones

Motorola came into being in 1930 manufacturing car radios, before developing mobile phones in the early 1980s. The first commercial cellular phone was a Motorola, released in 1983.

Once a giant of the mobile phone scene, Motorola faltered after the success of its RAZR handset range in the 2000s, and struggled to make much of an impression towards the end of the decade. However, in 2009 the launch of the Motorola Milestone (named Droid in the USA) which runs the Android OS, received widespread praise and signalled a return to form.

Motorola was bought by Google in a move designed to compete with Apple (by controlling the software and hardware) and access Motorola’s 17,000 strong software patent library.

Motorola smartphones

Motorola’s range of smartphones boast an array of impressive features, with touchscreens and keyboards, each model offering something distinct to the user; from the waterproof Defy and Defy+, to the Atrix with its innovative lapdock and the sliding keyboard Milestone. In 2011 Motorola brought back the RAZR, adding Android and a Kevlar build, followed by the Motorola RAZR MAXX.

Motorola also offers tablets powered by Android. Motorola’s debut tablet was the Motorola Xoom in 2011, which included a dual-core processor and HDMI. These tablets utilised Motorola’s impressive technological innovations - in fact Honeycomb debuted on Xoom, but like Samsung and HTC, Motorola has not replicated Apple's success in the tablet sphere.
