Nokia Mobile Phones

Finnish manufacturer Nokia has long been recognised as a major player in the mobile market, its phones were seen everywhere thanks to their comfortable build, distinct design and solid reliability and Nokia was the world’s largest vendor of mobile phones from 1998-2012.

More recently, as Android and Apple smartphones have become the mobile device of choice at the high end, Nokia’s marketshare has slipped and it has had to rethink and find a way to compete against the new market leaders. Consequently in 2011 the company announced it would be using Windows Phone as its main operating system, stating: ‘the smartphone battle is now a war of ecosystems’ and Stephen Elop took over as CEO.

Nokia smartphones

Nokia’s original handsets, released when the mobile market first erupted, were extraordinarily popular. Models like the Nokia 1100 and Nokia 7700 were reliable and performed well with some nice extra features.

Nokia’s is known for innovating within the multimedia space with its N-Series Symbian handsets. The Nokia N90 included a unique swivel lens that looks like a video camera, which then evolved into the Nokia N93, while the Nokia N92 was designed for watching mobile television.

Nokia’s first Windows Phone release was the Lumia 800 in 2011, since then the manufacturer has continued to expand the range at lower-price points, with features like Nokia Drive and Nokia Music distinguishing them from the WP pack.

The company continues to support Symbian (an OS much loved by fans) focusing more on the developing world with the affordable dual-sim Asha range, and innovation with the 41-megapixel 808 PureView, although it's short lived Meego OS never made it to the UK.
