With a capacitive touchscreen and Comes With Music, our hopes were high for the Nokia X6 handset to be a nice mid-range phone which does the basics and does them well. Sadly, it doesn't quite live up to our expectations, even preset as they were to middling.
What we like
The screen. The X6 is Nokia's first capacitive touchscreen phone and a huge improvement compared to previous Nokia phones that used resistive screens. A flick of the screen and it responds - not a stylus in sight. The camera is pretty good; with a flash, 5 mega-pixels and that familiar Carl Zeiss lens.
Being able to use whatever cans we fancy is a must for a phone that's so geared towards music playback, so we appreciate the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. We're still in awe of the Comes with Music deal, digital rights managed or no. With a massive internal memory of 32GB, there's plenty of room to store all that media too.
The email function is passable - it's quick and easy to set up and you can easily see the latest email in your inbox on the home screen. Once it gets going, processing times and web browsing are pretty quick.
What we don't like
There's one word which repeatedly sprang to mind whilst we were testing the X6: scrappy. The chasis itself feels quite cheap, and it has quite a toy-ish look about it. You really want it to have a slide out keyboard - it certainly looks as though it's hiding one - but it doesn't; all typing is done onscreen (eventually, after a good search for the keyboard you'll convince yourself is there somewhere).
Writing text messages and emails is quite a chore; to use a full screen Qwerty keyboard, the phone has to be landscape due to the size of the screen. To compose the message upright, you're stuck with the keypad layout you may remember from the dark days before smart phones.
The home screen is not pleasing. For a relatively small screen, the icons are too big and immovable leaving it seeming cramped. Nothing seems to be quite where we want it to be - the layout of apps and options, although customisable to an extent, was not user friendly and we often found ourselves scanning through menus getting increasingly irate.
The X6 also seemed to be quite lethargic; opening applications and even unlocking the screen and keys was a frustratingly slow process. In reality all it takes is a matter of seconds, but as you grow less tolerant towards the handset every millisecond grates just a little bit more.
We're just not inspired by the X6. While there is no one major flaw (although the hardware leaves plenty to be desired), there are so many little issues that the overall experience is irreversibly tainted.
Nokia X6 User Reviews
"What a pile of poo, predictive texting is pointless as it always pics the wrong word and nowhere does it tell you how to change it, it keeps locking up for a few seconds, frequantly you cannot stop the alarm as the screen locks out so you have to snooze it whether you want to or not, often the Bluetooth just won't connect, switch phone off and back on and its fine, music gets stuck in the folder and you can never add to playlist, I'm on my second phone and the faults are identical to the first."
"Its extremely slow and frequently crashes. It's far from user friendly often leaving you irate when trying to change a setting or trying to find something you have just downloaded or stored. It sometimes opens up applications by itself that quietly run in the background and slows it down even further. The format of the front screen is very poor with icons that are far too large and theres not much you can personalise.
This mobile feels and acts like like an old outdated phone, it is definately not a smart phone!
I have always been a follower of Nokia however, with this model, they have certainly let themselves down."
"i am using this phone from past six months.but i got one issue that while talking in phone the opposite person voice is not clear in handset mode.like some resound but speaker mode is fine.except this one remaining all are okay."
"It appears that I have the same problem as several other buyers of this particular model. Personaly I find this phone easy to use but it doesn't seem to with-stand much of an impact mine is broken and i have only droped it 3 times but for some reason it was working after that and now it doesn't seem to turn on, I get the odd stroke of luck and it turns on but then after bout 5-10 mins it disconnets from the network and/or turns it self off and i have to wait for it to want to turn on. Overall I wouldent recomend this phone. If you have the problem of callers geting muted what I done was lock the phone"
"NOT GOOD! is constantly locking up, has now started to screech and then disconnect. Handset also remains on touchscreen when on call, friends being muted and placed on hold."
"Unfortunately I agree with the moaners and wouldnt rate this phone at all. It has just rang now and it sound as if it was warped, it wasnt even my correct ringtone for whatever reason it started ring with the Nokia tone !! Will be returning it back to 3 and see what they say!!"
"Handset not good. not easy to use, keeps disconnecting all the time. not user friendly at all."
"Terrible phone but good camera. Drops calls Continues to act as a touchscreen when speaking, hence "mute" and "on hold" become activated. Deleted all my messages. Poor response to touch, sluggish. Terrible internet, kept freezing. No caller id."
"To be honest I think Nokia x6 is brilliant, but there are one or two problems, 1) the touchscreen freezes occasionally and 2) Whilst texting it deletes the writing while I am writing it. Apart from that it is pretty good.... Just wish they added a stylus too lol x"

"I love this phone! Had NO problems at all, I have recorded short videos on when out, have a cool ring tone from down loaded music, and have never had a problem using text as I have it set as a standard keypad. Had it for over 6 months and think the whiners are either geeks who cannot afford an iphone or just need to learn how to use it properly!"
"Fantastic. Does every thing I wanted that an Iphone can do. Glad that Vodafone spent the time selling this phones capabilities. Even have a better monthly rate. Very satisfied. Had the phone almost 5 months. Love it!"
"What a pack of ole moaners. I\'ve had the X6 for few days now & think it is excellent. Well done Nokia."
"been through 4 of these so far and now this ones gone wrong!!!! these are good for nothing else than paper weights.... dont do it just dont upgrade or buy it look elsewhere"
"I have had this phone for a few months now. You can change the applications that appear on the menu screen so that you can access them frequently and easily. It has two cameras, the main one onhe back of the phone and a secondary camera on the front. The sound and cameras are of excellent quality. The only problems I have come across is the phone deleting text as you are writing (this happened twice to me and I text daily) but this can be overcome if you press the green tick. The other problem is you must exit applications and folders correctly or a symbol appears to show they are still open. It is easy to close applications/folders properly through the main menu \'show open applications\'. Everything else works efficiently and effectively. A great all-rounder with hidden extras! There are some good applications that are free or to purchase."
"i have th nokia x6 and so far have not had any problems with it"
"I've had this phone for half a year now and i do actually love it. Although it can be slow sometimes, especially when opening the gallery and the music, and it is a little heavier than i expected, i have experienced no other problems and i recommend it since it is a really good phone."
"I.m not going to give this phone a rating! So far nothing but problems with it! while you are texting the phone has a wobble and deletes the whole text! It is also slow! Now I can't even get it to work, so It is going back to 3! No! I'm really not happy with this phone, I upgraded from the Nokia N8G and oh I do miss that phone, just left with this crap phone!"
"I have had this phone a weed now and had no problems with it, the only fly in the ointment is that no stylus is supplied to allow you to text with out sending out gibberish."
"I had this as an upgrade, and I have not been able to use the phone proper,it has been returned once in exchange for another one and is still not working the way it should work, sound system is not too good both ringer and player volume is low,can not hear the phone ringing some time,i have to have the volume turned to the max to listen to music and when in a noisey enviroment cant hear music proper,i would never recomend this phone to any one"
"never had a phone with so many problems. I had this as an upgrade, 3 weeks in and I have not been able to use the phone, it has been returned 3 times now and is still not working. would not even consider giving a a rating"
