BBM Music for BlackBerry gives music a social twist

If you’re rocking a BlackBerry and want to smash together music and social networking then RIM have an app for you.

BBM Music launched yesterday in the US, Canada, and Australia (UK coming soon). Rather than being a traditional streaming or subscription music service, RIM have decided to put a little twist on things.

You start off with choosing 50 tracks from their library of millions. The incentive to be able to listen to more tracks is adding friends. Add someone and you’ll get access to their 50 tracks, and vice verse. As explained on the BlackBerry blog, if you added ten friends each with 50 tracks, then you could have access to 550 songs relatively quickly.

It’s an interesting idea, discovering and getting access to more music by being social instead of hunt for songs yourself. Then again, you can have your cake and eat it too with Spotify: access to the whole library and being able to see other users playlists, for a similar cost too.

BBM Music requires a Premium subscription which costs $4.99. You can use the service for free, but you only get access to 30 second song previews instead of the whole track. You get to try a Premium subscription free for two months though, just to see how it all works.
