One day our poor, tattered retinas will rebel against us, being forced to stare at one too many a tiny, high definition panel. LG’s latest offering is nothing short of a monster; the LG Spectrum rocks with a big 4.5-inch screen that packs in a resolution of 1280 x 720 – the same as Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus.
Its also got a massive PPI (pixels per inch) count, packing in more detail than an iPhone Retina Display across a larger area. That said, we’re sure that your average pair of eyes won’t be able to notice much of a difference between the iPhone 4 / 4S’s 326 PPI and the Spectrum’s 329 PPI.
Pixel densities aside though, the Spectrum’s screen is much bigger – an inch bigger across the diagonal to be exact. This alone puts the 3.5-inch Retina Displays of the 4 and the 4S to shame, as well as that of the Galaxy Nexus.
Boasting a 16:9 aspect ratio, Tim O’Brien Vice President of Marketing for LG Mobile said at LG’s CES 2012 keynote “you get a true HD viewing experience, without distortion” with the LG Spectrum.
The most powerful mobile display on earth?
Screens aren’t everything though; to whit, the LG Spectrum comes packing a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera that’s capable of recording HD video at 1080p. That ought to look scarily good on the Spectrums’ HD display.
One minor snag is that it’s going to ship running Android 2.3 Gingerbread – we say minor because an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is on the cards.
Another clincher, for us rain-loving Limeys at least? This beast was developed in tandem with Verizon in the US, and it looks like it won’t be coming out over here. An ESPN Score Centre app also comes pre-loaded, giving the discerning gridiron fan some eye-melting HD sports action. Besides the hardcore sports fans, this doesn’t look like it adds much interest for your average Brit.
That said, we’ve every reason to remain Optimus-tic for a European variant, one without LTE radios inside. Hopefully with a new Sky+ Android app or a MOTD wallpaper…
