The Sony Xperia S is the latest Xperia phone from Sony (formerly Sony Ericsson, pending approval of the merger).

The Sony Xperia S prominently boasts high definition imaging capabilities; it’s got a huge 12-megapixel camera that can record 1080p HD video and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera that can record 720p HD video.

The 4.3-inch touchscreen has a 1280 x 720 resolution (aka 720p) so you’ve got a display that’ll do the high definition stills and video you end up taking justice.

Bolstering the 12-megapixel camera of the Sony Xperia S is Sony’s Exmor R low light sensor. This was a standout feature of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc; the low-light sensor adjusts to gloomy and poorly-lit locations, letting more ambient light into the camera resulting in great low-light image capture. The camera unit features an aperture of f/2.4 and a single LED flash, rounding out the low-light support credentials of the Xperia S.

Fittingly for a phone with a 12-megapixel camera, 32GB of flash memory comes installed so you’ve got plenty of storage on board out of the box. There’s no memory card slot meaning that this can’t be expanded any further.

There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack, Sony’s trademark xLOUD (loudspeaker booster) and TrackID (track recognition) giving the Sony Xperia S life as a replacement portable music player as well.

There is an HDMI connection allowing you to show off your high-definition pictures and video on a bigger screen, GPS and GLONASS antennas for improved navigation. An NFC chip is also baked in to the Sony Xperia S that'll allow you to trade contact information with other NFC-enabled phones and tap to activate certain phone functions - like the alarm clock or GPS - with Sony's own NFC tags.

Powering everything is a 1.5GHz dual-core chip (Qualcomm’s MSM8260) and 1GB of RAM meaning that web browsing, HD video playback and high-end games ought to be lightning fast on the Sony Xperia S.

Arriving on shelves this March, the Sony Xperia S, will ship with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and wil get the upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich later in the year.

No pricing information has been released yet. O2, Three and Phones 4U will be selling the Sony Xperia S with Phones 4U exclusively selling the white version alongside the standard black edition.
