2015 Volvo XC90 video review: A Range Rover rival?

The Volvo XC90 has always been a strong contender in the luxury off-roader category, but side by side with the Range Rover it was just a little bit inferior.

But this is the new XC90 and it’s been heavily revised. It goes better, feels better and it’s arguably a much nicer looking machine – all valid reasons to bump it up your consideration list. Luxury feel and finish only sweeten the deal.

We road-tested the D5 model, which manages 225hp, 470Nm of torque and 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds while sipping fuel to the tune of 50mpg. Who says diesels no longer have their place?

Like its predecessor, it has seven seats to accommodate large families and the space in the rearmost is actually bearable for adults, while the off-roading prowess means it can and will tackle pretty serious terrain in its stride. It’s utterly overkill for the school run, that’s for sure.

Meanwhile things like an integrated booster seat, automatic tailgate you can use by swiping your foot under the rear bumper, and reclining rear seats make it score highly in the versatility and practicality stakes.

There are some seriously impressive alternatives to the new XC90, including the BMW X5 and Range Rover, but you know what? In some ways it’s better. Watch Rory’s video to find out why and cast your eyes over the full review here.
