Bentley Bentayga wants to be the world’s fastest SUV

Saying you’re the fastest is a bold claim in the motoring world, but then the Bentley Bentayga sports utility vehicle crossover has the credentials to back it up.

Bentley Motors released a YouTube video of the Bentayga hitting a ridiculous 301kmh, which in old money is 187mph. That’s faster than a Range Rover Sport SVR, which tops out 25mph earlier, and 11mph faster than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

Hell, even unrestricted BMW Ms and Mercedes-AMGs top out far sooner, suggesting this British Brute will be an absolutely mileage destroyer if you happen to be on the German Autobahn or care little about your driving licence.

Not only will it be the fastest, it will wear the most powerful SUV crown as well. A new 6.0-litre W12 TSI 12-cylinder engine gives the Bentayga with a thunderous 600hp and 664lb/ft of torque to play with.

Bentley describes the Bentayga as “a unique combination of performance and luxury”. It added: “Performance of this nature is rare in any car. It was unheard of in an SUV ─ until now.”

Porsche said it will be fighting back with an even faster Cayenne, mind you, so the celebrations could be short-lived. Even so, these are big luxury beasts that weigh multiple tonnes – the fact they are knocking on 200mph is, frankly, ridiculous.

Those who remember back to 2012 might have a noticed a it looks like the EXP 9 F concept, which is what the Bentayga is based on.

Details are scarcer than a scarce thing, but that has done anything but stop 4,000 Bentley fans from expressing interest in what will probably be the most expensive crossover known to man.

Bentley’s last teaser showed the Bentayga’s more rugged side as it tackled the sort of terrain you are unlikely to see outside of Harrods. Watch both videos below while we wait patiently for more info.
