Here’s one for classic car enthusiasts. A rare Austin Metro that is almost brand-spankers is going up for auction at CarFest South at the end of August.
The 1983 Austin Metro Vanden Plas 500 is one of just 500 cars ever built, with only five believed to be left in the UK. It has covered just 741 miles and is said to be in ‘excellent and fantastically original condition’, having spent most of its life in storage.
It was a part of the Patrick Collection of vehicles in Birmingham, but could now be yours to own when it goes under the hammer on the 29th of August without a reserve. That includes the A500 VOJ registration.
As cars go, an Austin Metro is not exactly Steve McQueen cool but this is a 32-year-old example that has only seen the seals and water pump replaced over its lifetime. Blasts from the past are rarely as pristine as this.
There’s no disputing the popularity, though, as 1.3 million Metros were sold by 1994. Even Princess Diana owned a red W-plate example before she got engaged to Prince Charles. This particular model was, in fact, built to celebrate 500,000 sales.
The current owner said: “I doubt you will find another Metro like this in the world. I don’t even think that anyone has ever sat in the passenger seats! I really hope the new owner continues to cherish this amazing car for the future.”
Classic Cars Auction will be responsible for the auction. General manager Guy Lees-Milne added: “It’s a delight to be offering such a special British icon in our sale at CarFest. This is a unique opportunity to own an incredibly rare car, at no reserve, and this example is one to potentially bubble-wrap for the future.”
