You can now order the new Ford Mustang – and it will cost much less than think. Yes, the 50-year-old American icon is finally available for those who drive on the right side (in both senses) of the road.
Available in Fastback and Convertible flavours, the new Mustang comes equipped with one of two engines: a giant, earth-destroying 5.0-litre V8 and a Ford GT-esque (unveiled in Detroit) EcoBoost engine.
The 2.3-litre, four-cylinder EcoBoost has 309bhp (314PS). Stick your foot to the floor in the V8 and there is 412bhp (418PS) to play with. For some reason Ford forgot (or neglected?) to mention performance figures for the UK car so we have asked for clarification.
No surprise to note the V8 churns out as much as 306g/km in its convertible form, compared with 229g/km at worst for the 2.3 EcoBoost convertible, putting it in the more expensive M tax bracket instead of L. Oddly, the six-speed auto proves more efficient than the six-speed manual only in the case of the V8.
Standard equipment comes in the form of Ford’s Sync 2 (not Sync 3) infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen and voice control, 19-inch wheels, performance brake package, automatic HID xenon headlights, LED tail lamps, rear diffuser, dual-zone climate control and a nine-speaker sound system.
Chuck a few extra quid at Ford and you can spec climate control seats and 19-inch alloys with a Lustre Nickel finish. Ten paintjobs are available including Competition Orange and Triple Yellow.
Those wanting to spec their Mustang can for the first time use an Apple or Android app if the web configurator is too much hassle. By doing so you can check out the engine noise, cabin and show off photos of the car you are buying to friends, if that’s your thing.
Shipments for the UK 2015 Mustang are expected to arrive in late Autumn 2015, so not long before you can cruise the mean streets of Slough, American style. Prices start from £28,995 for the 2.3 EcoBoost Fastback rising to £38,495 for the 5.0 V8 GT six-speed auto.
