Behold the German wagon that is the new Mercedes C-Class.

First we brought you details and images of the 2014 Mercedes C-Class back in December 2013, now we have the UK price and specifications to share. If you like your saloons German, comfortable and (relatively) affordable, step this way.

Keeping things simple is a choice of two engines, a 184bhp C 200 petrol with 300Nm of torque and a 170bhp C 220 BlueTEC diesel with 400Nm of torque. The former can manage 0 to 62mph in 7.5 seconds with the manual gearbox, while the latter does it in 7.7 seconds. Both cars are capable of 145mph.

The petrol engine is the less frugal option, but 53.3mpg and 123g/km of CO2 emissions is hardly to be sniffed at. Still, the diesel’s 70.6mpg and 103g/km of CO2 (65.7mpg and 109g/km with the auto) is certainly more impressive.

SE, Sport and AMG Line make up the three specifications on sale. The Sport model includes 17-inch alloy wheels (up from 16-inch on the SE), LED headlights, Garmin navigation, lowered comfort suspension and chrome exterior trim.

Spend a few quid more and the top-spec AMG Line adds AMG body styling for a more aggressive look, 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, sports suspension, Artico finish for the upper dashboard and a new AMG steering wheel.

Standard equipment on the new C-Class includes a 7-inch centrally-mounted infotainment display, two-zone air conditioning and a touchpad for controlling the entertainment functions. There’s also a reversing camera, automatic wipers, Attention Assist to keep your eyes on driving, Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Speedtronic cruise control.

Five driving modes can be selected as you drive along. Eco, for example, makes the C-Class as efficient as possible, lowering the point of a gear change, reducing power used for the air conditioning, heated seats and rear window and softening the throttle, while Sport+ sharpens the throttle response and, in the case of the optional Airmatic option (£895), firms up the suspension.

The 2014 C-Class is around 100kg lighter than its predecessor and is 95mm longer, 45mm wider and the wheelbase has increased by 80mm. The boot is larger, too, at 480-litres.

A number of packs are available to further bolster the equipment level, including the Premium Pack that adds a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats with a memory function and an ‘ambient lighting system’ for adjusting the ambience of the interior on the Sport and AMG Line model. Expect to pay an additional £1,595 for the privilege.

The C200 and C220 BlueTEC starts from £26,855 and £29,365 for the SE 6-speed manual. A top spec C220 BlueTEC AMG Line with the 7-speed automatic starts from £34,355.
