2014 Skoda Yeti comes in City and Outdoor flavours

Good news, Bigfoot aficionados. The multi-talented Skoda Yeti crossover is back.

The 2014 model will now come in two forms, City and Outdoor. In its City guise, you get body-coloured bumpers, underside guard door sills and side-mouldings for a contemporary appearance. Opt for Outdoor and you get lashings of black plastic for that authentic 4×4 look.

The new 2014 Yeti looks very similar to the old one, but the round headlights have been replaced with more aggressive, rectangular offerings located under the front bumpers. The grille has been redesigned, too, making the car look more beastly, like the mythical creature it shares its names with.

More revisions have been going on at the back. There’s a new tailgate, rear lights and two strange-looking ‘cubist triangular elements’. It looks more grown up but, dare we say it, less quirky.

Skoda has made the 2014 Yeti better equipped. You can now opt for a rear-view camera (a first for Skoda) and there are detachable LED lights in the boot, under the driver’s seat and in the side door, ideal for helping you pick out hairy mythical beasts in dark environments. Or finding your phone. New bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights help light the road ahead.

Like the current Yeti, the 2014 model can ferry four or five people with plenty of boot space – 405 litres rising to 1,760 litres if you fold the rear seats down.

Seven engines will be available, mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or 7-speed DSG automatic driving either two or four wheels. The bottom of the range is the 105bhp 1.2TSI, rising to the 2.0-litre TDI 170hp diesel via the eco-friendly GreenLine, a 1.6-litre TDI capable of 61mpg and CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

A UK price and exact specifications will be revealed nearer the on sale date, Skoda tells us. We’re guessing we will know more when the car makes its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
