2014 Toyota Aygo inspired by ‘Japan’s hip youth culture’

New Toyota Aygo features trendy styling, improved efficiency and a more comfortable and spacious interior.

Toyota has unveiled the new Aygo at the Geneva Motor Show. The latest version of the city car has been designed with fun in mind, which explains the funky design said to be inspired by trendy Japanese youth culture.

The 2014 Toyota Aygo is 25mm longer (3,455mm) and 5mm lower (1,460mm) than its predecessor, yet headroom for the driver and front passenger has been improved by 7mm. The front and rear tracks are 8mm wider, too, while the wheelbase is identical.

Up front is where the most prominent change can be seen. Where the old Aygo looked bland, the new Aygo has a fancy ‘X’ arrangement that gives the car an anime, superhero-esque vibe. At the back are new rear lights that start in line with an integrated spoiler and curve in towards the middle of the back.

Customisation is how the 2014 Aygo stands apart from its Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1 twins. The X-shaped front grille, front bumper, rear bumper insert and alloy wheels can be specified to suit your tastes. Tire of the interior and you can swap the instrument panel, centre console, air vents, shift knob and gear level surround.

Just in case going through each individual component sounds like a waste of your time, Toyota offers customisation packs that bundle in a number of aesthetic changes.

Toyota has widened the armrests to improve comfort. Meanwhile the new dimensions of the Aygo provide an extra 29-litres of space in the boot, bringing the total to 168-litres.

A 68bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol is the only engine available. Compared with the outgoing model it is just as slow, with 0 to 62mph taking 14.2 seconds, yet CO2 emissions have been reduced to 95g/km and fuel efficiency has gone up by 4.6mpg to 68.8mpg. Torque is rated at 95Nm, with 85Nm available from 2,100rpm. An eco version promises to offer 89g/km and 72mpg.

A five-speed manual is standard. The x-shift automated manual transmission, which allows manual gear selection with flappy paddles or the gear level, is available as an option.

The list of standard extras includes a USB connection, hill-start assist and LED running lights. Up yourself to the x-play trim level and you get 15-inch alloy wheels, height-adjustable driver’s seat and a steering wheel with lots of buttons on it.

Spend even more and the top-spec x-wave adds an x-touch infotainment system complete with a 7-inch touchscreen display, part-leather seats and a canvas roof for a spot of open-top motoring.

The new Toyota Aygo will go on sale in the summer of 2014. A UK price and specification list will be announced before then.
