An Asian motorist who was eight times over the drink-drive limit has been let off, after judge says “Asian people process alcohol differently.”
A Swedish man of Asian origin who was charged for drink-driving has been let off, with the judge noting that alcohol is processed differently depends on ethnicity. The 63-year-old man was charged after a petrol station attendant in Karlskrona, southern Sweden, claimed to have seen the man behaving drunk whilst filling his car up.
Once the police had tracked him down and breathalysed him at home, he was found to be eight times over the Swedish drink drive limit — with a blood alcohol level of 1.64 per millilitre. The man was charged, but denied the allegations.
The man’s friends tried to cover his tracks by telling police that he’d had 18 centilitres of whiskey since arriving home.
The defendant escaped punishment primarily because it couldn’t be proven that he was driving his car whilst under the influence of alcohol.
However, the judge noted the statement put forward by the man’s defence lawyer, who said alcohol: “differs between different kinds of people. Native Americans and Asians have a completely different metabolism and way of processing alcohol than western Europeans.”
