BMW 4 Series release date, price and pictures revealed

We first saw the BMW 4 Series concept back in December of 2012 and then again at the Detroit Motor Show in January. Now we can wrap our eyes around the actual production car, which goes on sale in the UK this October.

The BMW 4 Series Coupe and the forthcoming Convertible is the replacement for the 3 Series Coupe and 3 Series Convertible. It is wider, longer and lower, with a longer bonnet and sleeker roofline complementing recognisable Beemer traits such as the double-kidney grille.

The 4 Series is geared towards performance. BMW has given it the lowest centre of gravity of any of its cars, blessed it with wider track widths (45mm and 81mm at the front and rear, respectively) and made the chassis 60 per cent stiffer than in the 3 Series. In layman’s terms, it should be more of a giggle in the corners.

Those who buy a 4 Series when it goes on sale in October will have a choice of three engines, with three more to arrive in November. Up first are the 245bhp 428i four-cylinder petrol, 306bhp 435i six-cylinder petrol and 184bhp 420d diesel.

Naturally, the diesel is the most frugal of the three, with 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 124g/km. It also has the lowest starting price. Expect it to hit 0 to 62mph in 7.5 seconds.

For those who crave a bit more oomph, the 428i reaches 60mph in 5.9 seconds and can manage 42.8mpg with 154g/km of CO2. The 435i is quicker still, managing 0 to 62mph in a more impressive 5.4 seconds, but fuel economy and emissions slide to 35.8mpg and 185g/km.

You’ll get a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard whichever engine you opt for. Those of you without a left leg will be pleased to hear an 8-speed auto box will be offered a month later alongside the 184bhp 420i petrol, 258bhp 430d and 313bhp 435d, the latter of which will only come with XDrive four-wheel drive.
Standard fixtures and fittings for the 4 Series include Bluetooth, a 6.5-inch colour display, plus automatic lights, wipers and boot opening and the option to adjust driving modes to suit the journey.

Five levels of specification – ranging from SE to M Sport – will be available. M Sport cars will benefit from even sportier suspension, a special steering wheel, an M bodykit and aluminium interior trim.
The BMW 4 Series will go on sale in October of 2013. Prices will start at £31,575.
