BMW X4 fuses the proportions of a taller, fatter coupe with the practicality of a taller, fatter coupe.
These days it’s all the rage to combine two purposes in one car. Case in point: the BMW X4 is the German manufacturer’s first ‘Sports Activity Coupe’ (SAC), a strange concoction of practicality, coupe looks and ground clearance.
The BMW X4 is based on the BMX X3 platform even though it looks more like the BMW X6. It is, however, 36mm lower to the ground and 14mm longer than the car it shares a platform with. It also has bigger air intakes, a coupe-esque roofline and fog lights that give it what BMW calls ‘sporting character’.
BMW has opted to give the X4 a choice of three diesel engines, the smallest of which is the xDrive20d mated to a standard 6-speed manual gearbox. It develops 190hp at 4,000rpm and 400Nm of torque, giving it a 0 to 62mph of 8 seconds. Fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions are rated at 54.3mpg and 138g/km, respectively.
Then there’s the xDrive30d, which is capable of 47.9mpg and 156g/km of CO2 emissions. Power is 258hp and torque is 560Nm from a mere 1,500rpm. 0 to 62mph takes 5.8 seconds. Last up is the xDrive35d, which offers a range-topping 313hp and 630Nm of torque from 1,500rpm, while somehow managing 47.1mpg and 157g/km of CO2 emissions. 0 to 62 takes only 5.2 seconds.
A sport leather steering wheel, heated front seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, Auto Start-Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, Variable Sport Steering, automatic tailgate, Performance Control, Xenon headlights and the BMW Business Media package are standard across the range. All models also benefit from 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats.
An additional £1,500 for the xLine adds different 18-inch alloys, satin aluminium exterior trim, dark copper interior trim, xLine leather upholstery and sport seats.
At the top is the M Sport, which commands a £3,000 premium on the entry-level SE. For your money you get M body kit for a more aggressive look, 19-inch M Sport alloy wheels, M Sport suspension, M door sills, sport seats and ‘Aluminium Hexagon’ interior trim.
Prices start from £36,590 for the xDrive20d SE, rising to £48,990 for the xDrive35d M Sport. The BMW X4 will be at your local dealership from July 12th, 2014.
