Car thieves caught after posting images of ‘cash sandwich’

It would be sensible for car thieves to try to keep a lid on things to avoid raising suspicion, but one gang decided to brag about their exploits, bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase “thick as thieves” in the process.

Rather than lay low and come up with good excuses as to why they suddenly have oodles of dosh and a string of new motors, the gang decided to take pictures of themselves posing on the bonnets of nine stolen vehicles, which included Range Rovers, Porsches, BMWs and an £80,000 Mercedes C63 AMG.

Said images, including one of a young lad pretending to eat a sandwich filled with £20 notes, were then posted on Facebook for all to see ─ including detectives hot on the heels of the gang. It was only a matter of time before detectives arrested the eight men involved.

Upon searching the gang’s belongings, police found mobile phone videos of the men racing the stolen vehicles and talking about the cars they were going to steal next, adding even more fuel to the already flaming inferno of evidence. Suffice to say, this was not a case for Monsieur Poirot or Jonathan Creek.

The gang committed 15 separate burglaries in the Kensal Green, Kensington and Notting Hill areas of London between April and September of 2012, including the theft of jewellery, laptops and phones.

The gang, headed up by ‘principal conspirator’ Kalan Williamson, would steal car keys from homes that had valuable cars parked outside and then drive away in the vehicle, along with other stolen goods.

Seven members of the gang – Akil Ford, 20, Conor Murphy, 19, Daniel Talbot, 23, Jonathan Oriba, 20, Kalan Williamson, 20, Niah George, 18 and Yassin Imlahi, 19 – all pleaded guilty to the same charge at Islington Crown Court. Williamson was jailed for 4 years and 8 months. 18-year-old Rory Mason denied involvement, but was later found guilty by a jury.

The moral of the story? Crime can pay, but only if you aren’t a total idiot.
