109hp Honda-built lawnmower breaks world speed record by more almost 30mph. No, really.
Your typical lawnmower is slow, noisy, hated by anyone with hayfever and rendered useless when it comes into contact with a stone. Honda’s interpretation of the trusty grass cutter, however, is a different beast entirely.
What it lacks in a roof it makes up for with speed. Lots of it, in fact. The 1,000cc, 109hp ‘Mean Mower’ just broke the world speed record for a lawnmower. It hit 116.57mph as it blasted through a 100 metre speed trap, beating the previous world record of 87mph.
Mean Mower was created to remind the world Honda produces more than just cars. It was built with the help of Team Dynamics, Honda’s British Touring Car Championship partner.
“The original brief for Mean Mower was to create the world’s fastest lawnmower – and now it officially is, by some distance!” Honda PR communications manager Ellie Ostinelli said. “We are all delighted to hold a Guinness World Records title and we’d like to thank everyone who was involved in what has been a challenging yet incredibly exciting project.”
The Honda Mean Mower is a re-engineered HF2620 lawnmower. It has been built from the ground-up to have a new chassis made from 4130 chromoly and a Honda VTR Firestorm engine. The suspension and wheels come from a quad bike.
Honda was clever enough to use the grass collection area at the back to store a fuel tank, high-capicity oil cooler and a secondary water cooling radiator. Amazingly, Mean Mower can actually cut grass when it isn’t tearing around as it has two electric motors and a 3mm steel cutting cable. This allows it to mow a lawn at 15mph – nearly twice as fast as the standard mower.
A few interesting stats for you. Mean Mower weighs just 140kg and produces 96Nm of torque. That means it has a power-to-weight ratio of 532bhp per tonne. That puts a lot of supercars and sports cars to shame. It’s no wonder the wacky machine can hit 0 to 62mph in four seconds.
