Man asks police to pull him over for marriage proposal

Video captures moment police help with recreation of how a couple met.

The internet is awash with marriage proposals. Few, however, can rival the bizareness of how Matt Van Vliet chose to propose to girlfriend Samantha Lobo, as a video of the event captured by a police dashboard camera reveals.

Reports say the couple originally met at a party that was raided by police. Both passed the breathalyser test, having been suspected of underage drinking, and were waiting to be picked up when cupid struck.

Van Vliet decided that it would be a good idea to recreate the moment when attending a college reunion five years later in New Hampshire. He asked if the cop who originally arrested them would pull them over again so that he could propose.

The ruse is all-too believable, given the convincing acting on the part of one of the police officers involved. At one point, when Labo asks what they had done wrong, the officer says bluntly: “Are you driving the car? Well then don’t be asking any questions.”

“They pretended to put handcuffs on him behind his back,” Labo told New Hampshire news and weather channel WMUR9. “Then the cop started patting him down and pulled something out of his pocket.” That something was an engagement ring.

“I went from being the most terrified I’ve ever been to probably the most ecstatic,” Labo added.

In case you were wondering, Labo said yes (phew). The couple are aiming to get married in 2015.

A waste of police time? You betcha. But there’s something oddly poignant about the whole affair that makes us not care. It was, after all, a strange set of circumstances that brought them together in the first place.
